You Are What You Think About

Have you ever stopped to really pay attention to your thoughts? Sure, we’ve all heard that we should be mindful of what we’re thinking. But let’s be honest—how often do we really take that advice seriously? Maybe we notice our thoughts for a little while, but then life gets busy. Before we know it, we're back on autopilot until…
You're moving through your day, and everything seems fine. Then, somewhere along the way, things take a turn. You feel off—maybe even downright miserable. What happened? Did you notice the shift? Do you even know what's bothering you?
The truth is, there is immense power in your thoughts. They shape your identity, your actions, and the outcomes you experience in life. What you think about becomes your reality.
The Power of Positive Thinking
If your mind is full of positive thoughts, you're more likely to see life through a lens of opportunity, gratitude, and abundance. This mindset attracts more positive experiences and energy into your life. On the flip side, dwelling on negativity can leave you feeling stuck, drained, and hopeless. Which version of life sounds better to you?
Here’s the best part: your thoughts are within your control. Yes, you can decide how you want to think, even if it feels difficult at first.
Let’s say you hate your job. You wake up every day thinking about how miserable it makes you, and soon, your unhappiness spills into every part of your life. But what if you made a conscious decision to see things differently? What if you focused on the benefits that job provides—like a roof over your head, food on your table, or the ability to save for your dreams?
One mindset drains you, while the other empowers you. The choice is always yours.
Shifting the Meaning You Assign
Every thought you think carries meaning. When you decide what an experience means to you, that meaning can either uplift you or bring you down. For example, if you label a challenging situation as “proof” that you’re unlucky or destined to fail, and we have all done that, you’ll feel defeated. But if you see it as a learning opportunity or a stepping stone, you’ll feel motivated to grow.
Ask yourself: If I can’t change the situation, what’s the point of thinking about it in a way that makes me feel worse?
The Law of Attraction: Creating Your Reality
Your thoughts don’t just stay in your head—they have a way of showing up in your life. Have you ever worried about something so much that the very thing you feared ended up happening? It’s not magic; it’s focus. The more you dwell on a thought, the more energy you give it, and the more likely it is to manifest.
The good news? This works both ways. Focus on the positive, and you’ll start to see more of it unfold.
Why Do We Default to Negativity?
You’re not alone if negative thinking feels like second nature. There are reasons for this, rooted in how our brains evolved:
Survival Instincts: Our ancestors needed to focus on threats to stay alive. That negativity bias is still with us today, even though most of us aren’t dodging predators.
Past Experiences: If you’ve faced rejection or failure, your mind might lean toward anticipating more of the same, trying to “protect” you from future pain.
Self-Protection: Expecting the worst can feel like a way to shield yourself from disappointment—but in reality, it often just blocks the good from coming in.
Media Influence: News and social media thrive on negativity. If you don’t filter what you consume, it can shape your outlook for the worse.
Memory Biases: Negative memories tend to stick more than positive ones, reinforcing your negative outlook over time.
Event Interpretation: Neutral events can feel negative if your mindset is already there. A flat tire isn’t proof of being “unlucky”—it’s just a flat tire. Change your perspective.
Confirmation Bias: We look for evidence to support our beliefs. If you believe life is hard, you’ll only notice things that validate that belief. Sometimes you even try to find ways for this validation to be there, just to feel or be right.
Emotional Amplification: Negative emotions feed on themselves. If you’re not careful, they can spiral into a loop of negativity that’s hard to escape. Notice this when you are thinking negative thoughts on one topic, others will likely come to the surface also.
How to Break the Cycle
Become Aware: Notice when your thoughts shift toward negativity. Ask yourself: Is this thought helpful? Why did this thought come up?
Reframe Your Thinking: Find a new, empowering meaning for the situation.
Focus on Gratitude: Even in the hardest moments, there’s always something to be thankful for. The more you are grateful for something, the more you will have to be grateful for.
Practice Positivity: Visualize the outcomes you want, not the ones you fear.
Remember, your mind is like a garden. What you plant today will grow into the achievements and dreams you’ve been working toward. Nurture it with positive, empowering thoughts, and watch your life transform.
Because you truly are what you think about. 🌱✨
